After taking over the company in a management buyout in 2011, Gary Knight has seen turnover more than double at the company from £550,000 five years ago to £1.2 million this year. The company aims to build on this, targeting £2 million of turnover in three years time.
This will be achieved, in part, thanks to recent investments in new production and automation equipment. The company has also cut its carbon footprint significantly in recent months.
In June, Wheatley Plastics invested heavily in two new Borche injection moulding machines, one 150 tonne machine and one 200 tonne machine. These were bought to help fill new contracts won by the manufacturer.
Following on from this, the new production manager Matthew Day joined the team in July. He has made an immediate impact, helping identify sound efficiency investments to make the company’s Stockport mill site more efficient and cost effective.
Prior to joining Wheatley Plastics, Matthew had set up his own successful injection moulding company which he sold in 2014.
Managing Director Gary, who worked at Wheatley Plastics for 15 years before performing the management buyout, believes that these recent changes will help the company grow. But he is for the firm to hold onto its deep roots and family culture.
“Wheatley Plastics has been trading for over 60 years, and some of the senior managers have been here for nearly half that time. Going forwards, it’s important that we hang onto the company culture that has helped us build so many successful client relationships,” he said.
He continued: “But not everything is the same, we’ve definitely changed our game up. We’ve already managed to increase capacity by automating parts of the manufacturing process, and adding a new shift in the evening. This new investment will help us grow even more. This year, in the last ten months, we’ve invested upwards of £150,000 in machinery.”
The new machinery investments include:
- 150 tonne Borche injection moulding machine
- 200 tonne Borche injection moulding machine
- 30 tonne BOY injection moulding machine
- 55 tonne BOY injection moulding machine
- Moretto drying and delivery systems
